Think back to your last meal. Not a special one, just a regular Tuesday lunch. Can you actually remember tasting it? Or were you standing at the kitchen counter, phone in one hand, scrolling one feed while eating food you'd stopped noticing somewhere around the second bite?
If this sounds familiar, you're in good company. We are a well-fed, deeply distracted culture. We consume constantly, food, news, other people's highlight reels, an endless scroll that keeps promising satisfaction and almost never hands it over. We get to the end of the day stuffed and somehow still empty. Full, but not fed.

Chinese medicine has a name for the part of us that runs all of this, and late summer, right now, is its season. It's called the Earth element, and it has been trying to get your attention.
The everyday alchemy you never think about
In Chinese medicine, the Earth element governs two organ systems: the Spleen and the Stomach. Think of them less as the physical organs you learned about in school and more as a job description. And their job is one of the quietly astonishing things your body does all day long.

Chinese medicine calls it transformation and transportation. Your Stomach receives whatever you give it and starts breaking it down (the old texts call this "rotting and ripening," which is exactly as earthy as it sounds). Your Spleen then transforms that raw material into something called Gu Qi, or food Qi, the usable energy pulled out of what you ate.
From there it gets transported upward to the Lungs, where it meets the air you're breathing and gets distributed through your entire body as Qi and Blood, the vital energy that lets you think, work, move, and love.
This is what Chinese medicine calls your post-heaven Qi. Not the energy you were born with, but the energy you make yourself, every single day, out of what you take in. Which means, in the most literal sense possible, you are what you transform.
Most of us don't usually think of the digestive system as an act of alchemy. But that's precisely what it is. Raw material in, life force out. Every day, without applause.
The question the season is actually asking
Here's where it gets interesting for us, because the Earth element isn't only about food.
It governs whether we can take anything in and be nourished by it. Food, yes. But also rest. Help. Care. A compliment. A day off. A quiet afternoon that you don't immediately fill with a task.
And this is where our whole culture trips, in a single word: consuming. We are consuming all day long. Think about how much of the day now disappears into a screen, thumb scrolling, feed refreshing, taking in an endless stream of other people's lives and opinions and outrage. Then ask yourself how nourished you actually feel at the end of it. Usually the opposite. Wired, a little hollow, weirdly hungry for something you can't quite name. That is the tell.

Consuming is not the same as being nourished. You can take in a staggering amount and transform almost none of it into anything that truly feeds you. Overfed and undernourished. Because your Stomach's job is to break down what life hands you, and your Spleen's job is to turn it into something you can actually use, and you cannot transform what you never really tasted.
Now, the part that's for you specifically, practitioner.
Five-element teachers have a quiet tell for spotting an Earth imbalance. It's the person who always brings the gift. Always asks how you're doing. Always, always looking out for everyone else first. Sound like anyone you know? It's most of the healers I've ever met, and if I'm honest, it's me on plenty of days too.
You are genuinely magnificent at giving nourishment. It's the whole reason you do this work. But the Earth element is asking the harder question, the one you almost never turn on yourself. Can you receive? Can you let yourself be fed, supported, cared for, poured into? Because a well that only ever gives eventually runs dry, and you already know this. You just tend to know it for everyone but you.

Sweetness, reframed
Every element has a flavor, and Earth's is sweet.
Not the sugar-bomb kind. I'm not here to sell you dessert, and honestly, I don't even really crave sweets myself. I mean the gentle, natural sweetness of a roasted squash, a sweet potato, a warm pot of congee. In Chinese medicine a little of that sweet flavor feeds the Spleen, while too much, especially refined sugar, drowns it. (Which, if you've ever watched your own energy tank an hour after a pastry, you already understand in your body.)

But the deeper sweetness this season is pointing at isn't on your plate at all. It's satisfaction. Contentment. The felt sense of being genuinely nourished by your own life.
There's an idea at the heart of Taoism called zhi zu, which translates to something like "knowing sufficiency." Lao Tzu put it plainly a couple thousand years ago: the one who knows contentment is already rich. Late summer is the season of ripeness, the warm, slow stretch when the fruit finally hangs heavy and perfect on the vine. Nothing more needs adding. The only real work is to slow down, take it in, and actually taste what is right in front of you.
So the question you were reaching for, "what sweetness am I missing," probably isn't about adding anything at all. It's about whether you've actually slowed down to taste what's already in front of you. Whether you can let it in.
This is what the old texts mean when they say that healing the Earth element isn't really about nourishment. It's about coming home to yourself. Earth is the ground you stand on, the steady place underneath everything. Coming home to it is the entire point of the season.
Bring it back to the body: CV12 and cardamom
Concepts are lovely, but you're a practitioner. You want something to do with your hands. So meet CV12.
CV12, called Zhongwan (which translates to roughly "central cavity," meaning the middle of your stomach), sits right on the midline of your belly, halfway between your navel and the bottom of your breastbone. It's the front-mu point of the Stomach and the meeting point of all the hollow organs, which is the technical way of saying it's the master switch for your entire middle. The exact spot where transformation happens.

Pair it with cardamom. Cardamom is warm, softly sweet, and one of the loveliest digestive oils there is. It's essentially the sweet flavor in a bottle, and it warms and wakes up a sluggish middle without any heaviness at all.
Here's the practice. Put a drop of diluted cardamom on your fingertips, apply it to CV12, and simply hold the point. No pressing. Just rest your finger there, breathe down into your belly, and let the oil settle in. Anywhere from 30 seconds up to 3 minutes is plenty. And while you hold it, you can do the quietly radical thing this whole season is asking of you. Receive. Let something in.

For your clients, this is a gorgeous take-home. Teach it as a thirty-second ritual before a meal, a way to actually arrive at the table before the first bite instead of inhaling lunch over the sink. Or fold it into a session as the grounding moment. It gives people a physical anchor for a very abstract idea, the difference between being nourished and just being full, and it quietly positions you as the practitioner who taught them that difference in the first place.
The whole point
The Earth element doesn't ask you to do more. It asks you to take in what's already here and let it become you. That's the alchemy. That's the sweetness. And it starts the second you stop consuming and actually taste.
So this week, before you hand one more thing to one more person, try holding CV12 for yourself first. Consider it research.
